The new Guinness PRO14 season kicks off with a thrilling all Welsh opening weekend on September 1st – with FOUR home fixtures for the Welsh pro teams and Champions Scarlets hosting a historic first fixture on Welsh soil for South Africa’s new arrivals Southern Kings.

With 10 of the popular and successful Welsh derbies still at the heart of Championship season, there’s plenty for supporters to get excited about in the new look Guinness PRO14.

The showcase culmination to the conference rounds will be Wales’ big DOUBLE DERBY Judgement Day VI at Principality Stadium at the end of April.

Chief Executive of Pro Rugby Wales, Mark Davies encouraged rugby supporters in Wales to get behind the new Guinness PRO14 and ensure Welsh Rugby welcomes and embraces big opportunities ahead for its four teams describing it as “major step forward for the professional game in Wales”.

He said: “We’ve seen a real drive and ambition from everyone in a small team at PRO14 to realise the first step in our goal of expansion for the Championship.

“PRO14 is already recognised by World Rugby for providing the most positive play of any club competition worldwide and now it spans 5 rugby countries and 14 teams with different playing philosophies, making for a fascinating contest with literally 5 Nations every weekend.

“This is an equally significant step for the professional game in Wales, further increasing our audience and opening up new markets and opportunities and helping us attract and retain the best players.

“We would like to thank our supporters – our customers, for their patience, understanding and encouragement to get the expansion over the line; together with our coaches and players who have focused on preparation for the season ahead, despite the delay in being able to finally confirm the season structure.

“Now that we have the fixtures agreed, it’s good to see clubs, coaches and players from across the PRO14 excited about a whole new experience and really looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“There are some great rugby occasions to look forward to this season – with two new attacking South African clubs who bring a new dimension and are full of energy and enthusiasm for an historic first season in the PRO14.”
