The search to find Welsh Rugby’s Superfast player!

Pro Rugby Wales, BT Sport, BT Cymru Wales and partners in the Superfast Cymru initiative have joined-up with the four Pro Teams in Wales to lay down a challenge to find the Superfast rugby player of this season…

The challenge has created plenty of fun, banter and friendly rivalry between the players at the Scarlets, Ospreys, Newport Gwent Dragons and Cardiff Blues over recent weeks – with sponsors naming the winner as Dragons back Matthew Pewtner!

BT Sport, BT Cymru Wales, Pro Rugby Wales and the Newport Gwent Dragons, Scarlets, Ospreys and Cardiff Blues are building on their close working relationship to promote participation and engagement in the game in Wales with this lastest challenge championing some of Wales’ most explosive and speedy rugby players and showcasing the talent of wider squad players – many of whom are not always in the limelight.

The Superfast Cymru  20m sprint challenge kicked off in February and it was the 6ft 3” 24-year-old Wales 7s and Dragons flying winger, Pewtner who has raced home to win the title with a stunning time of 2.52s over the 20m sprint beating off some tough international class competition across the four Pro Teams in Wales.

The top placed Superfast forwards and backs in each of the four pro teams were;

  • Ospreys back Josh Matavesi (2.74s) forward Dan Baker (2.86s)
  • Cardiff Blues back Aled Summerhill (2.72s) forward Macaulay Cook (2.89s)
  • Scarlets back Kyle Evans (2.68s) forward Sion Bennett (2.74s)

The Superfast Cymru “Superfast Challenge” gave both backs and forwards the opportunity to record the best times over a 20m sprint on the rugby field as part of their weekly training sessions overseen by conditioning and analysis staff.

Congratulations to Matthew for winning this season’s Superfast title with a brilliant time!

But the challenge has only just begun it’s hoped that more and more players and enthusiasts of rugby in clubs across Wales will join in and take the #SuperfastChallenge and see if they can get challenge our Rugby Professionals who have set the standard!

A big thank you to all the players who have taken part so far!
